          Gregory Aldrich is the Government Relations Manager for the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. Mr. Aldrich is based out of the Portland, Oregon office of DEQ.

Amali, Said: Aquifer Recharge and Recovery: Assessing Potential in the Umatilla Basin (OI #444: March 2009)

          Dr. Said Amali has more than fifteen years of direct experience in water resources evaluations/planning and environmental quality impact assessments/mitigation. He cherishes the challenges of multi-discipline and multi-stakeholder projects, especially when science, policy development, and public relations are intertwined. Since joining IRZ Consulting LLC, in Hermiston, Oregon, he has focused on securing environmentally responsible and sustainable water resources for the agricultural community in the Umatilla Basin of northeastern Oregon. He is the project manager for the Umatilla Basin Regional Aquifer Recovery Assessment involving assessments of Columbia and Umatilla Rivers water supply, groundwater aquifer characterization, stream and groundwater quality, fisheries resources, regulatory framework and water rights, and engineering design of water supply and distribution systems. His other projects have included water and watershed planning programs, wastewater reuse, and environmental compliance services for a broad range of contamination scenarios.

Bartz, David: Obama and The Environment (OI #448: July 2009)

     David Bartz is a shareholder at the Portland offices of the Pacific Northwest regional law firm of Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt, where he serves as the firm’s President as well as the Chair of its Natural Resources, Energy and Environmental Law Group of the firm. His practice focuses on the litigation of environmental and construction issues. He has extensive experience representing clients in court and before administrative agencies including the US Environmental Protection Agency, the Washington State Department of Ecology and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. Mr. Bartz served as Associated Oregon Industries representative on Oregon’s Air Toxic Advisory Committee (2000-2002). He is also a Board member and Secretary of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Oregon Chapter (2000-present). In 2007, he was honored by Oregon Women Lawyers Association for his work in promoting women and minorities in the legal profession. In 2008, the World Arts Foundation presented Mr. Bartz with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work to advance the success of minority attorneys.

Brandt-Erichsen, Svend: Stimulus Bill Infrastructure Funds Energy, Transportation & Water Projects (OI #444: March 2009)

          Svend Brandt-Erichsen, who practices in both Alaska and Washington, has been an environmental lawyer for nearly 20 years. He spent over 15 years in private practice and, before that, was Regional Administrator of the State of Alaska’s Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC). Svend has spent his career in energy development, assisting petroleum, coal-based and alternative energy firms with the environmental issues associated with project development and ongoing operations. He has worked on matters involving electric power generation and transmission, as well as oil and gas production, transportation, and refining, and has experience under all of the major environmental statutes. Svend represents the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, the operator of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Service (TAPS) on its environmental matters, as well as several oil companies with oil and gas platforms in Alaska’s Cook Inlet. He has advised an independent power development company on carbon management issues for coal gasification projects; litigated the adequacy of an EIS supporting a federal land exchange, among other NEPA matters; represented a coalition seeking reform of harvest practices that affect ESA-listed Northwest salmon and steelhead; and advised a Washington refinery in its response to a petition seeking ESA listing of a herring population that spawns near its facility.

     Gregg Bryden is a senior scientist at Kennedy/Jenks Consultants in Portland, Oregon where he helps industrial and municipal clients throughout the western US solve stormwater and wastewater challenges with solutions that enhance the lives of residents while protecting the environment. He always picks up after his dog, never uses chemicals on his lawn, and is obsessive about ensuring his car does not leak oil. As of 2010, Gregg is celebrating 25 years at Kennedy/Jenks Consultants.

Chappell, Michael: Clean Water Act Citizen Suits - The Plaintiff's Perspective: Liability is "Strict" - What's Left to Discuss? (OI #438, September 2008)

     Michael Chappell has worked in various capacities — student intern, law clerk, and attorney — for eight years at a San Francisco environmental firm specializing in Clean Water Act litigation. He represented grassroots environmental organizations, primarily groups that belong to the Waterkeeper Alliance, in Clean Water Act citizen suit enforcement actions. He worked on over sixty Clean Water Act cases filed in Federal District Courts in California. He also participated in approximately ten National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit challenges before the California’s regulatory agency and, when necessary, in California State Courts. In mid-June 2008, Michael opened his own practice in Spokane, Washington.

Curtiss, Sarah Stauffer: Steps Toward Net Environmental Benefit in Agency Decisions (OI #453, December 2009)

          Sarah Curtiss is an associate practicing in the Resources, Development & Environment practicegroup at Stoel Rives LLP, focusing on land use, permitting, natural resources, and development. Sarah regularly helps clients secure permits from local governments for industrial, commercial, residential, and mixedused developments. Her experience includes representing clients before local governing bodies and the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals. Dupuis, Tom: Water Quality Thermal Credit Trading: Methods for Quantifying Thermal Credits for Water Quality Trading (OI #435: June 2008)

     Thomas Dupuis, PE, has 30 years of experience in watershed and water quality management in over 30 states and 2 territories. His primary focus over the last 20 years has been assisting CH2M HILL’s clients in complying with the Clean Water Act. Specific expertise includes water quality credit trading, site-specific criteria, total maximum daily loads, water quality-based permitting, and antidegradation demonstrations. He is currently technical lead for CH2M HILL’s project for the Willamette Partnership to assist in developing an ecosystem marketplace. Tom also was a key player in the development of the landmark watershed permit issued to Clean Water Services in the Tualatin Basin. Prior to joining CH2M HILL, Mr. Dupuis worked for the North Carolina water quality and water resources agencies, and before that for a private environmental research firm in Wisconsin. He received bachelors and masters degrees in environmental engineering from Marquette University in Milwaukee.

          Brent Foster is Special Counsel for Oregon Attorney General John Kroger in Salem and in that position he advises the Attorney General on issues relating to environmental law. He has worked as a public-interest environmental attorney for the last ten years and has worked on a range of federal and state environmental enforcement actions. Brent has a law degree from Lewis and Clark Law School, and a B.S. and B.A. in Ecology and Environmental Science from the University of California at Santa Barbara.

     Katherine Futornick is a managing scientist with URS Corporation and specializes in strategic planning and management of complex environmental projects. Katherine is part of the Global Sustainability Group with URS. She completed her undergraduate degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and graduate studies at the University of Oregon and Oregon State University where she conducted research into the environmental stressors on internal opiates in mammalian reproductive systems. During the past 10 years, she has managed projects investigating mercury contamination from legacy mining sites and managed several watershed assessment and stormwater projects. Katherine serves as Chair of the Oregon Chapter of the Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA) and is on the board for the Pacific Northwest International Section of A&WMA.

Prior to entering private practice, Rick was staff counsel at the California State Water Resources Control Board, and then deputy City Attorney for the City of Portland, where he advised the City’s Bureaus of Water Works, Hydroelectric Power and Environmental Services. He is a former chair of the Oregon State Bar Section on Environmental and Natural Resources Law, and a member of the Water Resources Committee of the ABA Section on Environment, Energy, and Resources. Graham, Andrew: Oregon Water Demand Forecasting: A Transparent & Flexible Tool for Oregon Water Needs Assessment (OI #445, April 2009)

          Andrew Graham leads HDR’s water planning services in western Washington. He holds a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University. He is active in municipal water system planning and conservation. Andrew authored Washington State’s Guide to Watershed Planning and Management, and has produced watershed plans for the Yakima Basin and tributaries to the Lower Columbia River. Over the years, he has assisted the State’s Departments of Health, Ecology and Agriculture with policy and program development. In addition, he recently completed work on a statewide forecast of water needs for the Oregon Water Resources Department.

          Stan Gregory, is Professor of Fisheries in the Oregon State University’s Department of Fisheries & Wildlife. His extensive field research and many published materials include analysis of stream ecosystems (channel dynamics, woody debris, water chemistry, benthic algae, invertebrates, fish, salamanders, and riparian vegetation); landscape perspectives for stream ecosystems, the influence of human activities on ecosystem structure and function; historical reconstruction of rivers and riparian forests; and the development of restoration perspectives and practices that are consistent with natural stream processes. Griffin, Ann: Sustainable Communities Standard - The Earth Advantage Example: Verde Village in Ashland an Early Adopter (OI #445, April 2009)

          Ann Griffin is the Sustainable Community Program Manager for Earth Advantage, Inc. in Portland, Oregon. Earth Advantage® Inc. began a decade ago as an energy conservation program of Portland General Electric, and in the spring of 2005, it became an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. Since that time, it has grown to the Northwest’s premiere service provider of green building and climate change programs. Earth Advantage provides certification programs for residential new construction, and residential retrofit projects, the Earth Advantage Sustainable Community standard, and a small commercial program currently under development. Earth Advantage certifies homes as a third-party verifier for both the ENERGY STAR® and LEED for Homes® programs, conducts education and training seminars, and is a key contributor to the development of green building standards. The organization is well established with over 400 builders, remodelers, and sponsors throughout Oregon, Southwest Washington and Northern California, and licensed partners in the seven states of New England.

Grott, Robert: Ecosystem Markets - A New Paradigm For the Environment: National Conference June 18-19, in Portland (OI #447: June 2009)

          Robert Grott is the Executive Director of the Northwest Environmental Business Council in Portland, Oregon. Robert has a diverse background in non-profit management, business management, and consulting. Before joining NEBC, Robert ran Stirling Power, which focused on renewable energy projects using waste gas from landfills and wastewater treatment plants. Prior to that, he spent 12 years as a business consultant doing research and business planning for a wide variety of clients, ranging from utilities and government agencies, to technology startups and non-profits – first with Seattle-based O’Neill & Company, and then under his own firm. Earlier, he managed special projects for a PacifiCorp subsidiary and the Port of Portland. He began his eclectic business career running a natural foods store in rural Oregon. Robert graduated from Reed College with a degree in Psychology, and holds a Certified Management Consultant designation from the Institute of Management Consultants.

          Gretchen Honan, CH2M Hill, is a geographer with advanced training in wetlands and marine policy. She specializes in integrated water resources planning and manages a range of projects, including watershed studies, terrestrial and aquatic field studies, stream restoration planning, and design and analysis for project permitting. Gretchen is currently leading the public facility planning for the City of Damascus, Oregon, implementing an innovative approach to valuing public benefits that existing natural resources provide to the City. She led the development of quantification of eco system services and is now developing the recommended regulatory and market-based mechanism for ecosystem services exchanges.

Hulse, David W.: Willamette River Fish Recovery: "Stepping Stones" - Supporting Prioritized Restoration & Investment in Multiple Ecosystem Services (OI #431: February 2008)

     David Hulse is an Associate Professor and Department Head in Landscape Architecture at the University of Oregon and a member of the University’s Institute for a Sustainable Environment. His expertise is in geographic information systems and the use of computer-based tools for facilitating land use planning and natural resource decisions. Professor Hulse served as the Principal Investigator of the Chernobyl Project, a joint Russian/American project aimed at helping reduce human health risks. His current efforts include work with EPA and state agencies on development of spatial decision support systems for creating and evaluating different possible land use futures for their effects on water quality and biodiversity. Hulse is a graduate of Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, a Fulbright Scholar, and co-author of macGIS, a geographic information system now in use in over 1000 installations, in three languages, around the world.

     Jeff Hunter, a partner with Perkins Coie LLP who works out of the Portland, Oregon and Denver, Colorado offices, focuses his practice on environmental and natural resources law, real estate and land use and environmental litigation, including white collar criminal matters.      John Iani is available to represent clients in developing and structuring business and commercial endeavors, as well as to provide counseling on project development, energy, natural resources, fisheries, and environmental issues before Congress, federal and state agencies, regulatory bodies, and the courts. Prior to joining Van Ness Feldman in August 2004, John Iani served as the Regional Administrator for Region 10 of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

          Ronan Igloria, PE, is Utility Management Services Lead for HDR Engineering in Portland, Oregon. He is responsible for utility services related to planning, operations, and management. Johnson, Kim: Columbia River Basin Toxics - EPA’S Columbia River Basin State of the River Report for Toxics (OI #442, January 2009)
      
          Kim Johnson is an Environmental Engineer currently working on a six month detail to the Oregon Operations Office for the US Environmental Protection Agency in Portland. In her current position, she is responsible for providing support on the Columbia River Toxics Reduction Strategy and EPA’s National Commitment to the Columbia River in EPA’s Strategic Plan. She also represents EPA at the Columbia River Basin Federal Caucus and is currently leading a Water Quality Focus Workgroup of Federal Agency Representatives to identify collaborative Federal opportunities to reduce toxics in the Columbia River Basin. Ms. Johnson has over twenty years of experience with the federal government. Her experience includes 11 years in the EPA office in Kansas City, Kansas, five years with the Bureau of Reclamation in Montana, and five years with the USDA Forest Service in Idaho and Montana. Ms. Johnson has a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Montana State University.

Kealy, Mary: Ecosystem Services & City Planning: The City of Damacus Develops a Model Approach to Public Facilities Planning (OI #449: August 2009)

          Mary Jo Kealy, CH2M Hill, has over 27 years experience as a professional economist, specializing in the valuation of environmental amenities and ecological services using cost-benefit analysis, risk-benefit analysis, Habitat Equivalency Analysis (HEA), and Net Environmental Benefit Analysis (NEBA). Dr. Kealy’s experience with valuing ecological assets and/or evaluating ecological trade-offs covers a variety of contexts including: land asset management; water resource management; managing natural resource assets for sustainability; NEPA documentation; regulatory compliance (e.g., NRDA, CWA, RCRA); FERC licensing; and permitting. She is involved in several on-going water resource allocation projects involving diverse stakeholder interests, ecological values, and incentive-based solutions. Examples include: flow regime/aquatic ecosystem restoration in the Great Lakes Basin; water rights on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation based upon beneficial use; stream and wetland habitat restoration in the Great Lakes Basin; environmentally sustainable inter-basin water transfer in Texas; hydropower relicensing in Oregon/California; waterfront restoration in Dallas, Texas; and public facility planning in Damascus, Oregon.

Kelly, Kassandra: The Conservation Registry: WEB Tool Open for Business in Oregon, Washington & Idaho (OI #436: July 2008)

     Kassandra Kelly works for the Defenders of Wildlife in their Northwest office in Portland, Oregon. She is a member of the project team for the Conservation Registry, an online database that records, tracks, and presents conservation action information on multiple scales, which enables a better understanding of the scope of existing conservation actions on the ground. Kassandra also serves as the contact person for the Biodiversity Partners project, which aims to promote and support regional and statewide strategies to conserve biodiversity. Before joining Defenders of Wildlife, Kassandra worked in the visual and performing arts in Portland, Oregon as a consultant and grant writer. Kassandra holds a B.A. from Reed College and an M.F.A. from Pacific University.

          John Ledger is Vice President of Associated Oregon Industries, Oregon’s largest and oldest statewide business advocacy organization. He has been with AOI for 12 years, specializing in environment and energy and where he co-authored the Oregon Sustainability Act signed into law by Governor John Kitzhaber. He was past Assistant Director of the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality under Governor Cecil Andrus, and adjunct professor at Boise State University College of Business, teaching Government & Business. He holds a BS and MS in biology.

     Marc Leisenring, PE, is a Project Engineer with Geosyntec Consultants in Portland, Oregon. He has assisted with development of pollutant loading models and stormwater BMP decision support systems for Lake Tahoe and Southern California and currently is assisting the Water Environment Research Foundation develop BMP algorithms as part of a comprehensive model development effort to link runoff quality and BMP performance to receiving water impacts.
